The seminar will aim to raise awareness about the issue of translating in a court situation and will question whether human rights are being violated by current practices. A panel of experts will examine Ireland’s record in providing interpreters and the current training and language requirements for those who interpret in Irish courts.
Chaired by Dr Anne O’Connor, NUI Galway, the panel will include:
• Dr Mary Phelan, Programme Chair of European Masters in Translation Studies, DCU and Chairperson of Irish Translators’ and Interpreters’ Association
• Professor Lorraine Leeson, Centre for Deaf Studies, Trinity College Dublin
• Bernadette Ferguson, court interpreter
• Ulrike Fuehrer, Head of Interpreting, Conference Interpreter
• Colin Smith, barrister specialising in human rights law and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Law, TCD
